How does laser scar reduction work?

Scars are a very common type of skin changes. They may result from surgical treatments, scalding, injuries or inflammation. Scar reduction is very difficult. The best results can be achieved in the initial phase of the changes. Nevertheless, it is not possible to remove an existing scar completely. Palomar StarLux 500 with a fractional handpiece Lux1540 can be used in order to reduce scars and stretch marks when they are still in the initial phase. The Fractional Laser handpiece is the first to have been granted FDA (Food And Drug Administration) certificate which guarantees high efficiency in reducing stretch marks and scars.

Within one impulse fractional laser emits numerous microbeams which create narrow, deep columns of tissue coagulation that penetrate well below the epidermis and into the dermis. The laser impulses deliver light in an array of high precision microbeams which produce micro damage on the treated surface. The damage is intentional as it initiates a natural healing process that stimulates the formation of new skin. Each microbeam of the skin damaged with the laser is surrounded with healthy tissue which start intensive multiplication. At this point, new healing processes start to fill in the damaged treatment areas.

The aim of non-ablative laser is to damage the skin in and around the scar or stretch mark intentionally, in a planned and predictable manner. As a result the skin is stimulated to regenerate the planned damage which eventually results in a new, improved structure of the tissue.

Do I need local anaesthetic?

The procedure does not usually require the use of anaesthetic. We advise that the area is cooled just before and after the treatment which brings discomfort and pain to minimum.

Who is the treatment for?

The procedure is designed for people who wish to remove scars in the initial phase that may result from surgical treatments, scalding, injuries or inflammation. The treatment can be performed on any part of the body, the most common, however are the face, décolletage and hands.

What are the results?

During the treatment the laser damages the impaired tissue and stimulates it to regenerate the planned damage which eventually results in a new, improved structure of the tissue. The laser emits numerous microbeams which penetrate well below the epidermis and into the dermis to reduce scars and stretch marks. As a result the skin is stimulated to regenerate the damage which results in a new, improved structure of the tissue. Scars become flat and they are diminished. The result is a smoother, clearer and more youthful appearance to your skin.

When do I see the final results of the treatment?

It is usually not until 7 days before skin heals after the treatment. However, it is too early to expect the final results at this point as it usually takes several weeks before scars are diminished and the skin regenerating processes are terminated. Another similar treatment which is done 4-6 weeks after the first treatment helps to stimulate skin for even more intensive regeneration.

How many treatments do I need to see satisfactory results?

The number of treatments, each performed every 2-4 weeks, vary from 3 to 6, depending on how long the patient has had the scar, its size, the quality of patient’s skin and their age. Small scars on firm skin which are relatively recent can be reduced after only 3 sessions while more mature scars may require as many as 6 sessions.

How long do I see the results of the treatment?

The outcome of the treatments, which is better, healthy looking skin, is long lasting. However, we should remember that there may appear new changes as the treatment does not stop the aging processes that our skin undergoes. With time skin loses its firmness and becomes lax which may expose existing scars, stretch marks and other skin imperfections.

How often do I need to repeat the treatment?

First sessions, which do not normally guarantee immediate results, should be repeated every 4 weeks, the following sessions should be repeated every 2 weeks. After a series of sessions which considerably improve the condition of the skin, the procedure will not have to be repeated until a few years later.

Contraindications include

  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding
  • Oral retinoid medications
  • Herbs: St. John's-wort, marigold, horsetail
  • Photosensitive drugs : antibiotics and antidepressant medications
  • Acute skin inflammation
  • Skin cancer

How do I look just after the treatment?

Lux 1540 handpiece uses laser light to reach deeply into the skin’s sub-layers so there are no apparent uncomfortable changes on the skin surface which need to be healed. Shortly after the treatment you should expect the skin to be a little swollen, red and burning so soothing gel and cool compress are applied to bring discomfort to minimum. 2-3 days later swelling and redness resolve and the skin becomes rough and a little darkened. This old skin will now be peeled off within the next 4-5 days. Skin regeneration after the treatment is a continuous process which takes a few weeks before new fresh and smooth skin is finally revealed.

Before the treatment: guidelines

A few days before the treatment patients are advised not to have any kinds of exfoliating treatments such as microdermabrasion or chemical peels. They should not use any creams which contain retinoids, acids or tanning products. It is important not to drink any photosensitive herbs such as St. John's-wort, marigold or horsetail. Patients should make sure they are in good physical condition.

After the treatment: guidelines

The treatment performed with fractional laser Palomar Lux1540 is a fast and simple procedure that’s easy to tolerate and requires little downtime (3-7days). It is important to apply a soothing cream (Cicalfat, Zinalfat, Cicaplast Baume B5, Sensicure) for 7 days a few times a day until the skin surface is fresh and smooth. When the older, damaged tissue is finally removed, you can apply moisturizing and fatty creams (Cetaphil MD, Bariederm, Lipikar AP) and eventually resume your usual skin care practices.

How can I keep the result for longer?

Patients are advised to use high factor sun protection that will protect against both UVA and UVB radiation, products rich in retinol and peptides and balm fatty with oils. Patients are also advised not to suntan, smoke or expose their skin to any irritant chemicals.
The whole range of skin rejuvenating treatments such as medical skin peels and mezotherapy are also highly recommended every 6 or 12 months as they will help to keep the skin moisturized and delay the aging process so that you can enjoy the results of the treatment for longer.

Recommended supplementary treatments

Skin rejuvenating treatments performed with fractional non-ablative laser Palomar Lux1540 can be considered as scar reduction procedures and can be supplemented with other treatments. After the series performed with Palomar handpiece we recommend that our patients follow skin rejuvenating therapy with hyaluronic acid (Juvederm Hydrate, Ialest, Newest) revitalizing cocktails (CytoCare, StretchCare, NCTF, NCTF HA, Plinest, UpGrade, Fixer) or platelet rich plasma injections (Regeneris).

Who can perform treatments?

At Ekoderm all treatments are performed by experienced doctors trained in aesthetic medicine who have been given appropriate certificates.

Laser treatments of hyperpigmentation (laser Palomar StarLux 500 MaxG) Laser therapy

  • 1000 - 1500neckline
  • 1000 - 1500backs of the hands

  • 300single spot pigment dye
  • 800 - 1000cheeks
  • 1000 - 1500neck
  • 1200 - 1700face
See description

What kind of hyperpigmentation can be treated with MaxG laser?

Hyperpigmentation, ranging in colour from light orange to dark brown, usually appears on the face, cheeks, near the lips or on hands. The most frequent types of hyperpigmentation include freckles, melasma, or sun-related hyperpigmentation.
Hyperpigmentation can be a disturbing cosmetic defect which occurs among middle aged people and intensifies with time to affect the beauty of your skin. Although this problem is one of the symptoms of skin aging caused mainly by UV radiation, it is common among people of all ages.

How does laser vascular treatment work?

The laser energy emited by laser MaxG is absorbed by dark pigments in the skin such as melanin and hemoglobin which are responsible for undesired changes (darkened patches and vascular conditions). The skin selectively absorbs laser energy and converts it into heat which damages darkened patches of skin and spots leaving the surrounding tissue intact. This selective procedure is safe and effectively removes undesired changes.

Do I need local anaesthetic?

The procedure does not usually require the use of anaesthetic. We advise that the area is cooled just before and after the treatment which brings discomfort and pain to minimum.

Who is the treatment for?

The procedure is designed for both women and men who have noticed sun damage to the skin on their face, hands or décolletage. These skin problems include dark spots, patches or freckles which affect the beauty of our skin. The treatment can be performed on the face, décolletage and the hands which are the most commonly treated part of body.

What are the results?

During the treatment he laser removes darkened patches present on the skin leaving the surrounding tissue intact. After the treatment dark spots become lighter and the result is a smoother, clearer and more youthful appearance of your skin.

When do I see the final results of the treatment?

It is usually not until 7 days before skin heals after the treatment. However, it is too early to expect the final results at this point as it usually takes several weeks before dark spots disappear and the skin regenerating processes are terminated. The final results are normally achieved after 2-4 weeks after the treatment. Another treatment which is done at this time helps to remove any remaining hyperpigmentation.

How many treatments do I need to see satisfactory results?

The number of treatments vary from 1-3 depending on the patient’s age, their individual skin phototype, the type of hyperpigmentation and location. Dark patches on pale complexion may be reduced after only one treatment while lighter changes may require even as many as three sessions, each performed every 4 weeks. It should also be noted that hyperpigmentation is impossible to remove completely, it can only be reduced.

How long do I see the results of the treatment?

The outcome of the treatment, which is reduced spots, is long lasting. However, we should remember that there may appear new hyperpigmentation changes as the treatment does not provide protection from sun damage or tendency towards such changes. It may sometimes be necessary to have another session after one year, especially with patients whose skin is exposed to intense sunlight (sunlight, sunbed).

How often do I need to repeat the treatment?

First sessions, which do not normally guarantee immediate results, should be repeated every 4 weeks until satisfactory results have been achieved. It is not until a few years later that the procedure will have to be repeated again.

Contraindications include

  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding
  • Oral retinoid medications

  • Tanned skin
  • Recent chemical skin pills
  • Diabetes
  • Weakened immune system
  • Susceptibility to keloids

How do I look just after the treatment?

Shortly after the treatment patients should expect spots to be a little darker which means that the treatment has been successful. The skin is swollen, red with a sensation of burning. These are short-term effects as all patches and spots will be peeled off in a few day’s time. Soon after the treatment soothing gel and cool compress are applied to bring discomfort to minimum. Two days after the treatment swelling and redness resolve and old skin will now be peeled off within the next 4-6 days. After 7 days the skin regains its usual condition, dark spots become lighter or invisible.

How does skin resurfacing work?

The treatment is performed with fractional CO2 laser.

The aim of skin resurfacing is to damage the skin intentionally, in a planned and predictable manner. As a result the skin is stimulated to regenerate the planned damage which eventually results in a new, improved structure of the tissue.

Do I need local anaesthetic?

The procedure usually requires the application of anaesthetic cream (Emla) which is applied 30-40 minutes before the treatment. We also advise that the area is cooled just after the treatment which brings discomfort and pain to minimum.

Who is the treatment for?

The procedure is designed for both women and men who have experienced decreasing condition of their skin and wish to treat sun damage. These changes may also include wrinkles, creases, the loss of firmness and uneven pigmentation which are major indications for the treatment. Other indications may also include acne scars and enlarged pores. The treatment can be performed on any part of the body but the most commonly treated areas include the face, neck, décolletage and the hands where the skin ageing processes are the fastest due to sun damage. This procedure is also ideal for parts of body such as the neck, décolletage, eyes or the lips which are difficult to rejuvenate with other available treatments.

What are the results?

During the treatment the laser destroys the old and stimulates it to regenerate the planned damage which eventually results in a new, improved structure of the tissue. As a result the skin is stimulated to regenerate the damage which results in a new, improved structure of the tissue. Wrinkles, folds and scars become flat, lighter, while pores are minimized. The result is a smoother, clearer and more youthful appearance to your skin.

When do I see the final results of the treatment?

It is usually not until 7 days before skin heals after the treatment. However, it is too early to expect the final results at this point as the process of skin regeneration normally takes several weeks. The final result can be enjoyed after 6-8 weeks after the treatment. Another skin resurfacing treatment which is done at this time helps to stimulate skin for continuous regeneration.
How many treatments do I need to see satisfactory results?

The number of treatments vary from 1-6 depending on patient’s individual features such as aging processes, age and depth of wrinkles, pores, and acne scars. Mild wrinkles can be reduced with a single treatment while deep creases and acne scars may take 4 – 6 procedures each performed every 6-12 weeks.

How long do I see the results of the treatment?

The outcome of the treatments, which is increased quality of your skin, results from skin-deep changes to its structure and can last as long as a few years. Such evident changes can be observed with acne scars where the long lasting results are impressive. We should remember, however that such treatments do not prevent our skin from getting old completely. With time, wrinkles and the lack of firmness come back and unhealthy sun exposure gradually contributes to uneven pigmentation.

How often do I need to repeat the treatment?

First sessions which do not normally guarantee immediate results should be repeated every 6-12 weeks. After the series of 1- 6 sessions which considerably improve the condition of your skin, the procedure will not have to be repeated until a few years later.

How do I look just after the treatment?

Shortly after the treatment you should expect the skin to be a little swollen, red and burning. In some cases dripping of tissue fluid or blood may occur. Immediately after the treatment soothing gel and saline compresses are applied to bring discomfort to minimum. 2-3 days later swelling and redness resolve and a large thin scab is formed all over the treated area. The scab will slowly be peeled of within the following 4-5 days to reveal new skin. Skin regeneration after the treatment is a continuous process which takes place deep down in the skin layers

Before the treatment: guidelines

A few days before the treatment patients are advised not to have any kinds of exfoliating treatments such as microdermabrasion or chemical peels. They should not use any creams which contain retinoids or acids. Patients should make sure they are in good physical condition.

After the treatment: guidelines

It is important to apply a soothing cream (Cicalfat, Zinalfat, Cicaplast Baume B5, Sensicure) a few times a day for 7-10 days after the treatment until the scab is removed. During this time patients cannot go to swimming pools, touch the new skin with dirty hands or try to scratch the scab off. When the scab is finally peeled off, you can apply moisturizing and fatty creams (Cetaphil MD, Terproline) and eventually resume your usual skin care practices. It is also important to use sunscreen for six months after the treatment especially in spring and summer seasons.

How can I keep the result for longer?

Patients are advised to use high factor sun protection that will protect against both UVA and UVB radiation, products rich in retinol and peptides and vitamin C. Patients are also advised not to smoke.

How does laser stretch marks reduction work?

Stretch marks, also considered as a type of scars, are a common skin problem. They are caused by tearing of the dermis, which over time may diminish, but will not disappear completely. Stretch marks are often the result of the rapid stretching of the skin associated with rapid growth or weight changes. Stretch marks can appear anywhere on the body, but the most common places are the abdomen , breasts, upper arms, underarms, back (men), thighs, calves, hips, and buttocks.
It must be noted that stretch marks are very difficult to reduce once they have turned porcelain white. However, and it is still possible when stretch marks first appear as reddish or purple lines.

The MedArt FRx Fractional CO2 laser Laser therapy

See description

Within oneimpulse Fractional CO2 Laser emits numerous microbeams which createnarrow, deep columns of tissue coagulation that penetrate well belowthe epidermis and into the dermis. The laser impulses deliver lightin an array of high precision microbeams which produce micro damageon the treated surface.

The damage isintentional as it initiates a natural healing process that stimulatesthe formation of new skin. Each microbeam of the skin damaged withthe CO2 laser is surrounded with healthy tissue which start intensivemultiplication. At this point, new healing processes start to fill inthe damaged treatment areas.

The aim of laserresurfacing is to damage the surface of the skin intentionally, in aplanned and predictable manner. As a result the skin is stimulated toregenerate the planned damage which eventually results in a new, improved structure of the tissue. The microscopic damagedtreatment zones are surrounded by healthytissue which accelerates the formation of new skin with relativelyshort downtime.

Ekoderm surgeryoffers a wide range of skin treatments performed with MedArt FRx CO2laser.
