How does laser hair removal work?
Each hair grows out of follicles located deep in the epidermis. The colour of hair depends on genetics and hormones which control the action of melanocytes. Melanocytes, which are located at the base of the hair follicle, are responsible for the production of melanin which is built in the structure of hair. The laser energy produced by LuxR is absorbed by dark pigments in the hair follicles beneath the skin’s surface and it is converted into heat which reduces or eliminates the hair on the treated area. The body hair selectively absorbs laser energy while the intense flash of light with a filter appropriate for skin color and type cools the skin while the hair follicle is heated. This selective procedure damages the hair follicle and protects the skin at the same time which makes the procedure safe and highly effective.
Do I need local anaesthetic?
The procedure does not usually require the use of anaesthetic. However, with individual patients we may apply anaesthetic cream (Emla) 30-40 minutes before the treatment. We also advise that the area is cooled just after the treatment which brings discomfort and pain to minimum.
Who is the treatment for?
The treatment is designed for any patient who wishes to remove unwanted hair on the face or any other part of body. It is dark hair growing out of pale complexion that is the easiest to remove, however, with properly selected parameters it is also possible to remove lighter hair on dark complexion. Grey hair is the only type of hair that cannot be removed with the LuxR Handpiece.
What are the results?
During the treatment, the laser damages the hair at its growth phase leaving the surrounding tissues intact. The damaged hair can easily be removed immediately after the treatment. The hair stem, however, will gradually be released from the follicle imitating “growing” of new hair until it is finally removed leaving the skin smooth. The whole process can last until a few days after the treatment.
When do I see the final results of the treatment?
It is usually after several days after the treatment that patients should expect the final results. It should be emphasized however, that the LuxR Handpiece damages only follicles which are at the growth phase. This means that the remaining hair which is in the resting phase will start producing hair after a few weeks.
How many treatments do I need to see satisfactory results?
Depending on the hair colour, skin pigmentation as well as the area of the body treated, patients usually enjoy smooth skin without undesired hair after the series of 3 to 6 treatments each done every 4 to 6 weeks. Each treatment in the series allows to eliminate follicles which are at the growth phase.
How long do I see the results of the treatment?
Satisfactory results, which have been achieved after a series of 3 to 6 treatments, can usually be enjoyed for a long time. The final effect is permanent and there is no need to repeat the treatment in the future.
How often do I need to repeat the treatment?
Another treatment in the series should be repeated every 4 to 6 weeks until the patient can enjoy satisfactory results.

How do I look just after the treatment?
After the treatment, swelling, redness and the sensation of burning may occur and the area around follicles can be swollen. Cooling compresses and healing creams help to bring these symptoms to minimum. After 1 to 3 days when swelling and redness disappear, damaged hair is released from follicles and can be easily removed in the shower.
Before the treatment: guidelines
A few days before the treatment patients are advised not to apply any hair removal creams or have any kinds of exfoliating treatments such as microdermabrasion or chemical peels. They should not use any creams which contain retinoids, acids or tanning products. It is important not to drink any photosensitive herbs such as St. John's-wort, marigold or horsetail. Patients should make sure they are in good physical condition.
After the treatment: guidelines
After the treatment skin should be cooled with compresses and a thin film of healing cream should be applied. It is also important to use sunscreen (SPF50+ anty-UVA).
