Vascular laser therapy (Palomar StarLux 500 MaxG)
What kind of vascular conditions can be treated with MaxG laser?

Laser therapy is used to treat a number of vascular conditions which include spider veins (telangiectasias). Spider veins may develop anywhere within the body but they are a common facial skin disorder. Another vascular problems are wine stains, spider angiomas or cherry angiomas which also develop anywhere on the body. Palomar StarLux 500 MaxG is also used to reduce erythema for people with dilated vessels which may precede the development of acne rosacea.

How does vascular laser therapy work?

The laser energy emited by MAXG is absorbed by dark pigments in the skin such as the red pigment – hemoglobin, the ingredient of red cells. Skin vessels which are filled with red cells are an ideal target for the light emited by laser MAXG. The skin selectively absorbs laser energy and converts it into heat which causes coagulation of the vessels leaving the surrounding tissue intact. This selective procedure is safe and effectively removes undesired changes.

Do I need local anaesthetic?

The procedure does not usually require the use of anaesthetic. We advise that the area is cooled just before and after the treatment which brings discomfort and pain to minimum.

Who is the treatment for?

The procedure is designed for people who wish to remove dilated vessels from any place on their body. It is also for patients with other vascular problems such as wine stains, spider angiomas or cherry angiomas. The treatment can be performed on any part of body but is usually carried out on the face.

What are the results?

During the treatment he laser destroys abnormal vessels leaving the surrounding tissue intact. After the treatment dilated vessels become lighter, and the tendency for erythema diminishes considerably. The result is a smoother, clearer and more youthful appearance to your skin.

When do I see the final results of the treatment?

It is usually not until 7 days before skin heals after the treatment. However, it is too early to expect the final results at this point as it usually takes several weeks before abnormal vessels disappear and the skin regenerating processes are terminated. The final results are normally achieved after 2-4 weeks after the treatment. Another treatment which is done at this time helps to remove any remaining vascular changes.
How many treatments do I need to see satisfactory results?

The number of treatments vary from 1-5 depending on the size and number of dilated vessels. Smaller changes may be diminished after only one treatment while more complex changes may require even as many as 5 sessions, each performed every 4 weeks. It is especially difficult to treat the area of the nose. It should also be noted that it is sometimes impossible to remove vascular changes and erythema completely, but they can be significantly reduced.

How long do I see the results of the treatment?

The outcome of the treatment, which is reduced spider and cherry angiomas, is long lasting. However, we should remember that there may appear new vascular changes as the treatment does not provide protection from sun damage, especially to patients whose skin is exposed to intense sunlight or heat (sunlight, solarium, sauna, hot food and baths), irritant skin care products, local therapy with retinoids and acids, mechanical irritation such as rubbing the nose, and many others.
It may sometimes be necessary to have another session after one year.

How often do I need to repeat the treatment?

First sessions, which do not normally guarantee immediate results, should be repeated every 4 weeks until satisfactory results have been achieved. It is not until a few years later that the procedure will have to be repeated again.

Contraindications include

  • Pregnancy and breast-feeding
  • Oral retinoid medications
  • Herbs: St. John's-wort, marigold, horsetail
  • Photosensitive drugs : antibiotics and antidepressant medications
  • Acute skin inflammation
  • Skin cancer
  • Photodermatosis (sun sensitivity)
  • Psoriaris
  • Dermal filling with hyaluronic acid (treatment can be performed after 4 weeks)
  • Injectable poly-L-lactic acid (Sculptra)- (treatment can be performed after 12 weeks)
  • Tanned skin

  • Diabetes
  • Weakened immune system
  • Susceptibility to keloids

How do I look just after the treatment?

MAXG handpiece uses laser light to reach deeply into the skin’s sub-layers so there are no apparent uncomfortable changes on the skin surface which need to be healed. Shortly after the treatment you should expect the skin to be a little swollen, red and burning so soothing gel and cool compress are applied to bring discomfort to minimum. 2-3 days later swelling and redness resolve and the skin becomes a little darkened. This old skin will now be peeled off within the next 4-5 days. When skin regeneration process is finished, new fresh and smooth skin is finally revealed. All vascular problems are visibly reduced or even eliminated completely.

Before the treatment: guidelines

A few days before the treatment patients are advised not to have any kinds of exfoliating treatments such as microdermabrasion or chemical peels. They should not use any creams which contain retinoids, acids or tanning products. It is important not to drink any photosensitive herbs such as St. John's-wort, marigold or horsetail. Patients should make sure they are in good physical condition.

After the treatment: guidelines

The treatment performed with laser Palomar MAXG is a fast and simple procedure that’s easy to tolerate and requires little downtime (3-7days). It is important to apply a soothing cream (Cicalfat, Zinalfat, Cicaplast Baume B5, Sensicure) for 7 days a few times a day until the skin surface is fresh and smooth. When the older damaged tissue is finally removed, you can apply moisturizing and fatty creams (Cetaphil MD, Bariederm, Lipikar AP) and eventually resume your usual skin care practices. It is also important to wear sunscreen (SPF50+ anty-UVA).

How can I keep the result for longer?

As skin regeneration proceeds, patients are advised to use high factor sun protection that will protect against both UVA and UVB radiation (SPF50+ anty-UVA). Patients should also remember that smoking highly diminishes the results of any aesthetic treatment and they are advised not to suntan or expose their skin to any irritant chemicals. We also recommend that our patients follow mezotherapy every 6 -12 months which will help to keep their skin moisturized and delay skin aging processes so they can enjoy the results of the treatment for longer.

Recommended supplementary treatments

Skin rejuvenating treatments performed with Palomar MAXG can be considered as procedures aimed at reducing vascular changes and can be supplemented with other treatments. After the series performed with Palomar handpiece we recommend that our patients follow skin rejuvenating therapy with hyaluronic acid (Juvederm Hydrate, Ialest, Newest) revitalizing cocktails (CytoCare, StretchCare, NCTF, NCTF HA, Plinest, UpGrade, Fixer) or platelet rich plasma injections (Regeneris).
